Brands Hatch Race Report

Having never been or seen Brands Hatch before, it was vital I tested on the Friday before to ensure I was all ready to race… However the bike wouldn’t start and resulted in me missing the test day.

During the following night we were able to fix the bike but with no testing we wouldn’t know how well it was running, performance wise.

Saturday

Saturday qualifying was dry but cold. During the session I had to try and learn the track while making a good effort to qualify against riders who had mostly tested the day before. Another bike issue was highlighted during the session as the bike would stutter and not be smooth on applying power; therefore all these problems resulted in a bad grid position where I started further back on the grid.

Race 1 was a struggle as the bike was unpredictable in the power delivery making riding in the rain on an almost unknown track rather interesting! I tried my hardest to limit the damage to my championship and finished in 10th

Race 2 was a sign of progress as we fixed the bike which was now producing power in a much better way. However our gearing and suspension was wrong and made me unable to really push the bike in the already hard, wet conditions. But I finished in 13th which was good as it meant the damage to whole championship was minimal.

Sunday

Sunday free practice/warm up went a lot better than my previous dry session in qualifying. However as I was about to start my session the battery had somehow drained and was unable to start the bike. Therefore a quick rush back to the garage got the bike started and we were back out on track with only a few moments wasted. The warm up was beneficial to me as it enabled me to gain more track knowledge and the opportunity to improve my suspension settings ready for the following races.

Race 3 went a lot better than my previous races. I got a good start to put me further towards the front and slotted in front of Alex Wood. Laps went by in a good battle for 13th with passes into almost every corner. Luckily I was able to beat Alex to line and finish in 13th.

Race 4 was another good race building on the previous race 1 on Sunday. The decision was made to higher the gearing to allow more acceleration out of corners and maximise the engine top speed down the finish straight. However during the race this became apparent that we adjusted it too much which resulted in a worse set up. I still continued and set my fastest lap of the weekend while battling in a group of 4 containing Alex Wood, Cameron Tenzing-Jenkins and Jack Tynan. I finished in front of Cameron due to a pass on the last corner giving me a 14th place finish.

Luckily I was running EBC Brake pads which gave me no problems in stopping and gave me one less thing to worry about. Hopefully the next round at Donnington goes smoother as it’s a track I know and like.
